Details | Oral swabs, or single-source DNA samples provided on cotton tips, are considered ‘standard samples’ and are used in the majority of DNA tests involving living people. However, in some cases, it is not possible to obtain a standard sample, and unusual samples are instead accepted. ‘Unusual samples’ are mixed-source samples, nail clippings, toothbrush, bed sheet, hair with root attached, etc., and they must undergo DNA extraction before DNA testing can begin. Therefore, most unusual samples will incur a fee. Please contact us to have a confidential discussion about the type of sample you wish to submit. |

TEST DETAILS
SELECTING THIS OPTION MEANS YOU ARE PROVIDING A DNA SAMPLE THAT HAS NOT BEEN COLLECTED WITH A STERILE COTTON TIP. PLEASE CONTACT US TO DISCUSS THE TYPE OF SAMPLE YOU HAVE.
An ‘Unusual Sample’ is any DNA sample that has NOT been either A) collected using a PTC Sample Collection Kit or B) properly prepared and collected using a sterile cotton tip (Q-Tip) (contact us first for instructions).
All other samples – such as fingernails, hair with root/follicle attached, blood or semen stain on fabric, cigarette butts, condoms, toothbrush, etc. – will first require us to extract the DNA from the sample provided, in order to then proceed with the DNA Test. In all of these instances, this will incur the unusual sample fee, per each sample submitted.
Different unusual samples will yield varying percentages of successful DNA extraction viable to test. Contact us to discuss.
Unusual samples are not accepted for all tests; you cannot submit unusual samples for an mtDNA DNA Test (except in some rare circumstances), or for a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test (Blood). Also note, that tests using unusual samples cannot be ‘expressed’, and usually will not be accepted for Legal (Chain-of-Custody) Tests, because they have not followed the chain-of-custody of samples required by law. Learn more about the difference between legal testing and peace-of-mind testing in our FAQ.
